Health Information Sheet

Post Biopsy Instructions

  1. Keep the biopsy site dry for 24 hours. After that you may bathe or shower.
  2. You may apply ice to the breast once or twice for 30 minutes to relieve swelling or bruising following the procedure. Most people find that this is useful the first evening after the biopsy is performed. If you have discomfort, you may use Tylenol, 2 tablets every 4 hours or Ibuprofen, 1 tablet (200 mg.) every 4 hours. Many women find that a supportive sports bra makes them more comfortable for the first 24 hours (overnight).
  3. Most women do not find it necessary to restrict their activities following this procedure. As long as you do fell well, you may resume your normal schedule.
  4. You will have steristrip tapes intact over your breast biopsy. Remove after seven (7) days if they have not fallen off. Place a new plastic strip (also known as Band-Aids) over the steristrips every day for seven (7) days.
  5. You may notice some bruising in the area where the needle biopsy was performed. In general, this resolves in about 5 to 7 days. If you have bleeding or drainage from the biopsy site or it becomes swollen, red, or very painful, please contact Connecticut Surgical Group, PC (246-2071).
  6. The results of your biopsy will be available within about 24 to 48 hours. Your physician will then discuss the results with you.
