Colonoscopy Overview

Click here for the preparation instructions for your procedure.

Please follow instructions carefully. If you have questions, call your physician's office at (860) 548-7336.

IN PREPARATION
Take your daily medications unless otherwise instructed by your physician. A sip of water with your medications is acceptable.

Call your physician if you are taking blood thinners, aspirin, arthritis medications or insulin. Do not take any herbal or diet medications prior to your procedure. It is recommended that you stop using these 2 weeks before your procedure. It is also important to let your physician know if you have a condition called "sleep apnea". If you have this condition please bring a copy of your sleep study and any equipment that you use to manage it when you come for your procedure. You will be sedated during your procedure, therefore you must make arrangements to be driven home by a responsible adult. If these arrangements are not made, your procedure may be postponed. If you are non-English speaking or require assistance we encourage you to bring someone to assist you.

DAY OF PROCEDURE
When deciding what to wear to the hospital choose something comfortable that can be easily removed. Leave jewelry, money and other valuables at home. The hospital cannot be responsible for such items. Parking is available in the garage adjacent to the Medical Building at 85 Seymour Street or by using valet parking in front of the hospital. Your parking ticket will be validated on the unit. Go directly to the GI Endoscopy Unit at Hartford Hospital, 85 Jefferson Street, 3rd floor, Room 300.

Once on the unit, you will be asked to complete necessary paperwork, which includes authorization for the hospital to release information to your insurance company. Be sure to bring a valid insurance card. In the case of minors (under 18 years of age), a parent or guardian must accompany the patient. After your procedure, when conditions permit, you will be allowed one visitor. In the case of minors, both parents are permitted. Children are not allowed as visitors.

AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE
After your procedure, you will be taken to the Recovery Room, where your condition will be monitored by the nursing staff. The type of procedure you have had will determine the length of stay in the Recovery Room. Please feel free to ask our staff any questions. Remember that a responsible adult must drive you home.

DISCHARGE
When you are ready for discharge, the nurse will instruct you about your care at home. Since it is not unusual to feel sleepy or dizzy after anesthesia you must not drink alcohol, drive or make important decisions for 24 hours. Once home, follow the instructions given to you by the nurse and your physician. Be sure to contact your physician with any problems or changes in your condition.
