Colonoscopy Preparatory Instructions

This procedure is performed in the Gastrointestinal Unit at Hartford Hospital.

Report To:
85 Jefferson Street, Hartford, Suite 300, 1 hour before your scheduled appointment.

Blue Back Square, 65 Memorial RD, W. Hartford, 5th floor, 1 hour before your scheduled appointment.
You need to be adequately prepared for your procedure. The following steps are to help you prepare for your examination. If you have any questions with the following instructions, please call the office at (860) 524-2644. Please note the following preparation is done the day before your colonoscopy.

PURCHASE:       1)  238 gram bottle of Miralax
                             2) Crystal Light or Gatorade (Excluding Red Flavors)

MIX:                      Mix the 238 grams of Miralax with 64 ounces of  
                              Crystal Light or Gatorade

TIME:                     9:30am Begin Clear liquid diet until bedtime.

You may have breakfast the day prior to your procedure before 9:30am. Following breakfast you will then begin the clear liquid diet.

You are not to use asprin, iron compounds, blood thinners, or vitamin E (400 units or greater) for one week before your procedure. This is to help decrease bleeding that may occur if a biopsy is taken. Please let your PCP know if you are temporarily discontinuing this medication. Talk to your PCP about adjustng the does of oral hypoglycemics and insulin the night before and day of the procedure. All other regularyly scheduled medications can be taken, i.e.: high blood pressure and cardiac medications.

Regulations of the hospital are that you have someone drive you for this procedure. Your stay will be approximately 2 1/2 hours. You will be unable to drive yourself due to the sedation used during the procedure. Your exam will be cancelled if you fail to follow this requirement.
                               


MEDICATION GUIDELINES


SOME MEDICATIONS SHOULD BE DISCONTINUED SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE  PROCEDURE. FOR YOUR SAFETY - IF YOUR PHYSICIAN ADVISES THAT YOU STOP THESE MEDICATIONS BEFORE SURGERY - AND YOU DO NOT - YOUR SURGERY WILL BE CANCELLED.

DISCONTINUE 14 DAYS BEFORE SURGERY
  • PRESCRIBED AND OVER-THE-COUNTER DIET SUPPLEMENTS
  • ALL HERBAL MEDICATIONS AND SUPPLEMENTS (INCLUDING GINGKO BILOBA)
PATIENTS TAKING DIABETES MEDICATIONS:

DO NOT TAKE GLUCOPHAGE THE NIGHT BEFORE OR THE MORNING OF SURGERY
TALK TO YOUR PCP ABOUT ADJUSTING THE DOSE OF YOUR ORAL HYPOGLYCEMICS AND INSULIN THE NIGHT BEFORE AND DAY OF SURGERY.

NOTE: In order to be prepared for this examination, it is very important that you follow these instructions. You may drink as many clear liquids as you like, be sure to continue to drink clear liquids up until four (4) hours before the exam. If you do not move your bowels multiple times, you should call our offce.
